MELODY'S DREAM

"MY EDUCATION TRANSLATES INTO OPPORTUNITY AND EXPANSION OF MY NETWORK OUTSIDE OF MY FAMILY."

MY STORY

Tell us about your parents.

My parents are from Hong Kong, and they brought my sister and I here when we were very young. My parents did not go to college because they lacked access and resources. I always knew I'd go to college, as my parents encouraged me and were incredibly supportive of me. They gave me the moral and financial support I needed.

I think if my parents had the opporunity to go, they would have gone. If they could get a higher education, they would have had more access to resources and more connections in the world.

Why did you go to college?

I wanted to have more options in life.

What is your dream job?

I want to be successful in business some day. I would love to do UX research. I got a psychology degree, and I think it is really helpful in helping me navigate the social dynamic in the workplace. Psychology is really relevant in the business world.

What will be the biggest benefit of your college degree?

I think the network that comes with Harvard, or any college you go to, is invaluable. You meet so many incredible people from diverse backgrounds. I don't know how I would have spent 4 years of my life, or have landed the job I had without going to college.

What were challenges you faced as a first gen?

It required a lot more on my end to do more exploring. I think if I were to have parents who went to college or Harvard, it would have helped me immerse in the culture a lot earlier, and I would have adjusted to the environment a lot quicker.

MELODY'S ADVICE

Try to find someone you are comfortable with and reach out to learn about things early on. Not knowing to navigate the system causes problems. A lot of downsides to being a first generation student is that you don't have access to a lot of things. Learn as much as you can. Having a role model or pairing up and doing mentorship in a community with a lot of people is really helpful.

For people who are not sure about college, definitely go. In my mind, it is not a question - you should go to college, definitely. There's so many people with a college degree, what are you going to do without one?
